The rescue team successfully evacuated all the residents of the building and no casualties were reported.  The fire began at around midday in one apartment on the 20th floor of the building in the Rolla area. Eyewitnesses described how the fire and dense smoke billowed from one flat on the top floor. Residents panicked and started exiting the building. But some, who were slow to react to the fire alarm, were trapped on the top floor.

The fire squad reached the scene in half-an-hour and started trying to control the fire. However, they were not able to reach the top floor and finally had to call for helicopters. Around 2pm, a helicopter was seen circling around the building and it landed on the roof. The fire rescue team pulled out the stranded residents and also attempted to extinguish the fire.

“The entire road was blocked as the fire was fierce and threatened to spread to other flats. We were worried that we would lose all our belongings,” said a resident of the building.  At least four flats were damaged by the fire.  After around three hours of fire fighting, the fire was finally put out. Officials at the Sharjah civil defence confirmed that there were no casualties and trapped residents were successfully rescued. 
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
